Google Docs integration

As the title says, from now on, you’ll be able to open all your documents (doc, odt, xls, ppt, pdf, etc.) and edit them (well, the ones you can edit – read “no pdf editing allowed”) in your favorite online docs handling service! How does that work, you might ask? Well it’s pretty straight forward: you upload your documents on Wixi and as soon as you open them (or other old files you have), you can login to edit them directly with your Google account! You’re in Google’s yard now, and BAM, you get the document added to your Google Docs too.

Will the changes be consistent across Wixi and Google Docs? Yeah, of course they will :) . Everything you change to your doc on Wixi’s side or on Gdocs’ side, will be “synchronized” (actually, we’re not doing much here, we just let Google do its job).

Does Wixi know anything about the content of a doc? No, we’re just storing and passing it to Google Docs when you want to edit it. For real.

What about document privacy? Well, everything’s pretty locked down for now: you can only edit your files (you can’t edit another user’s docs in your activity stream). We’d love some feedback on this issue. Do you think others should be able to edit your files? Would you want to be able to invite another Wixian to some collaborative editing magic? Use the comments bellow or the forums to tell us your opinion.

Archives extraction

Archives extraction is pretty straightforward too: whenever you upload an archive, we automagically extract it (we currently support both .zip and .rar archives), then we create a folder with the archive’s name and put all the contents in there.

From there on, you can do whatever you want with the files inside that folder and, if you want your archive back, you’ll just have to download the archive folder.

Can I upload an archive which contains other archives inside it? Yes, you can, but the nested archives won’t be extracted. We’re still considering if we should give an option to extract those too, so again, your opinion would matter a lot.

We have finished the re-encoding of 2250 videos that had problems with their audio. This includes two issues:

(a) videos without sound

(b) videos with sound out of sync

Since the new encoder is also implemented for newly uploaded videos, the bug will not appear anymore. We will monitor this anyway to avoid surprises.

We’re sorry for the inconveniences this might have caused, and we thank you guys for the reports that helped us find the problem.

For your information, this is an encoding issue that has already been identified. We know the no-sound issue can be fixed for the uploaded videos –so there will be no need to reupload them! However, before we apply the fix, we are checking if the sync problem between image and audio was consequence of the same underlying cause.

By the way, we also want to tell you guys about an important bug we solved during the last few days. There was a weird issue with the infamous “File not found” sign in the player, and a lot of added files were displaying the error. This was related to the new mp4 encoding of files, and it turned out to be a simple bug with nasty consequences. Now it’s solved, so you can enjoy your videos again. No need to add them twice or re-upload them anymore!

There’s still a very specific encoding issue related to h264, which has its own sticky thread in the forum. This is being worked on by our developers, so don’t worry :)

Finally, Zak wants to clarify that no animals (i. e. no turkeys) were harmed during the making of this post.

The bad news is that seeking will not work for newly uploaded files. But don’t worry! Seeking WILL work for those very same files in the near future. We just have to tweak the Player a bit, which is not a big deal, but please be patient while we implement this new feature. :)

By the way, don’t worry about Zak, he’ll figure out how to get dinner ready for Thanksgiving. Do you want him to send you some very well done turkey?

What’s more , through his comments and replies, many new wixians will read the conversations that he takes part in. Much like the retwitting on Twitter, this will allow you to find new friends with similar conversations to help establish a better integration between newcomers and our existing community, since everyone by default shares this popular friend.

The subscription issues and the more bureaucratic aspects of the account are still managed by the guys at support [at] wixi.com, to whom you can always write and they will reply fast. Account cancellations are not Zak’s matter either, but for the other daily stuff, you can count on him.
